Not talking ... Toby Mitchell.

Three days later two men were arrested after they led police on a short chase while driving the wrong way up a Collins Street tram line. They now face charges of possessing an unregistered firearm.

While the pistol found in the vehicle is not believed to be the weapon used on Mitchell, theHerald Suntoday reports police also found a floor plan of the gym, which is beside the Bandidos clubhouse.

One of the men was reportedly a leader of jail gang Prisoners of War,which has been linked to gangland kingpin Carl Williams'killer,Matthew Johnson.

But police this morning would neither confirm nor deny if they had linked the arrests or the gun and map with the Mitchell shooting.

"Police never confirm or deny the names of people they may be investigating because that would hinder our efforts to solve cases or,in some circumstances, completely undermine an investigation,"a spokeswoman said.

"Revealing whether a particular piece of evidence has been seized or not also makes an already difficult task that much harder for investigators to establish the truth."

The botched shooting of Mitchell came after a"hit"was planned for his predecessor,Lee Undy.

Mitchell became chief Bandidos enforcer after Undy was arrested in September and charged with firearms offences.

Undy had armed himself because he feared he would be shot after police warned him a contract was out on his life.
