Wood,Bob Murphy's replacement as skipper, was a late withdrawal from the team that survived a late Eagles charge to win by eight points and move up into the first four teams on the ladder.
Bontempelli, standing in for Wood, gathered 30 possessions and laid nine tackles to be one of the Bulldogs'standout players.
"He had a scan during the week,Easton. He just had some tightness,"said Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge after the game.
"Nothing showed up. We thought he was going to be fine and then we had our last training run and he just didn't feel right so we thought'we won't risk it'and pulled him out of the game.
"I think based on Easton's history he'll probably be right next week. We'll see how he goes during the week. Bonty – he had 21 contested possessions out of his 30 and it's all about leading from the front. He was just outstanding.
"We've had[Dale Morris] as acting captain and had a win,and Bonty today, and even though Matty Boyd's had a go before as permanent captain it's probably his turn next time. He's got a bit to live up to."
