Kaufland is believed to need at least 15 to 20 stores to make its Australian investment viable. It's starting with a major supermarket in Adelaide.
Kaufland will build a signature 20,000 square metre supermarket on the Anzac Highway site, about four times the size of an average Coles or Woolworths store.
German customers compare Kaufland to a cross between a supermarket and a Kmart, similar to the shopping experience offered by another large new entrant on Australia's grocery scene,US giant Costco, but without the membership fees.
Costco has so far expanded to open nine big-barn supermarket warehouses across the country.
Kaufland is considered a popular one-stop shop with discount prices on both supermarket staples and extras like bikes or car maintenance supplies.
