The calendar was launched last night during a lavish affair in New York. While Enninful took on the job of styling the calendar shot in May before was appointed head of BritishVogue, the timing does address the tangible shift in mood for fashion and beyond in terms of furthering diversity.

"To see a black Alice today means children of all races can embrace the idea of diversity from a very young age and also acknowledge that beauty comes in all colours,"Enninfulsaid toVogue.

"Culturally we are living in a diverse world. Projects like this remarkable Pirelli Calendar demonstrate that there is still hope in what sometimes feels like an increasingly cynical reality."

According to TheUK Evening Standard,Naomi Campbell who appeared in the calendar 30 years ago as a 16-year-old starting out in the industry,the latest calendar represents a shift in conversation and representation. The 1987 calendar was the first all-black,featuring Campbell,Waris Dirie and Colette Brown.

"The message is so big and the timing could not be more perfect. It is an amazing time. It is a new time. I feel it will remain this way,"the now 47-year-old said.

"This week has been iconic and phenomenal,with BritishVogue and Pirelli,"she said."There have been some really great moments this year."

This is the 45th edition of the renowned Milan-based tyre firm's calendar - which in recent years has shifted from controversial and scantily-clad model images to re-establishing as cultural bodies of work. 2016 saw Annie Leibovitz photograph a series of women celebrated for their accomplishments and last year the calendar featured Hollywood actors including Nicole Kidman,Helen Mirren and Julianne Moore all make up-free.
