The latestHerald/Nielsen poll shows that even though most voters are unsure of the detail of the deal negotiated between Labor and the Coalition,66 per cent support an emissions trading scheme for Australia.
Only 25 per cent oppose a scheme. These levels of support and opposition have not changed since June.
The poll of 1200 voters was taken over Friday and Saturday as the Liberal Party imploded when rebels resisted Mr Turnbull's decision to support in the Senate the amended scheme that Labor and the Coalition negotiated.
The rebels, led by Nick Minchin and Tony Abbott, told Mr Turnbull that the only way to save his leadership was to delay a vote until February, after next month's United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen.
The poll finds 49 per cent of voters support waiting until after the Copenhagen summit, while 39 per cent want the scheme as soon as possible.
Yesterday an angry Mr Turnbull said the call for delay was an excuse for denial because Senator Minchin and Mr Abbott had no intention of passing the legislation in February either.
''They will not give up until they've bullied and intimidated the majority of the party into agreeing with their position,''Mr Turnbull told Channel Nine.
