The inquiry, which will focus on whether the government's methods to collect intelligence relating to the Trump campaign were lawful and appropriate,is separate from an investigation by the Justice Department's inspector general. The agency's watchdog is also examining the Russia probe's origins and Barr has said he expects the watchdog report to be done in May or June.

Congressional Republicans have also indicated they intend to examine how the investigation that shadowed Trump's presidency for nearly two years began and whether there are any legal concerns.

The recently concluded investigation from special counsel Robert Mueller did not find a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and the Kremlin to tip the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Hours after news of Barr's second investigation broke,Trump said he was"so proud"of Barr.

"They want to look at how the whole hoax got started,"Trump said on Tuesday as he departed the White House for an event in Louisiana."I am so proud of our Attorney-General that he is looking into it."

Trump denied that he ordered Barr to launch the investigation, though he has repeatedly encouraged it in public remarks.

Trump has insisted that the Russia investigation was politically motivated and concocted from false allegations to spy on his campaign and ultimately undermine his presidency. FBI Director Chris Wray testified before a Senate panel last week that he wasn't aware of any improper spying,a comment Trump said he found"ridiculous".

The review will also examine whether a dossier that included salacious accusations against Trump was fabricated by the Russian government to dupe US intelligence agencies and the FBI,Barr has said.

Durham is a career federal prosecutor who has handled high-profile investigations before, including a probe into the destruction of CIA tapes in 2005 of detainees being interrogated. Trump selected him to be the US attorney in Connecticut, and he was confirmed by the Senate in 2018.

In nominating him,the White House said Durham and other nominees for US attorney jobs share Trump's vision for"making America safe again".

In addition to conducting the inquiry,Durham will continue to serve as the chief federal prosecutor in Connecticut.
