Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said Kerr was the perfect mix of individual flair and team-oriented player.

"Sam has proved time and time again in the NWSL[the United States'National Women's Soccer League] that she is a prolific goal scorer. She’s won the golden boot many times and she’s a player that can make things happen, but she’s also a fantastic team player,"Hayes said.

"The fact she chose Chelsea when she could have gone to any club in the world is a testament to the players and the staff here because she saw this is the best place for her to grow and take the next step in her career. That’s a wonderful compliment to us all."

Kerr's deal is worth more than $600,000 a year,The Ageand the Heraldreported last week. With endorsements and her FFA salary she will likely tip over the million-dollar mark for earnings per year during the deal.

She will wear her usual No.20 jersey for Chelsea, with current No.20 and Swedish international defender Jonna Andersson moving to the No.25 shirt.

Kerr has never played in Europe, usually choosing to split her time between dominating the National Women's Soccer League in the United States, this season for Chicago Red Stars, and then Perth Glory in the W-League. That's despite European clubs courting her for some time.

This means Europe is very much Kerr's unconquered frontier.

She has won the last three golden boots in the NWSL and won the ESPY Award for best international women's soccer player in 2018 and 2019. She has also won two NSWL MVP awards. Despite that, she is yet to take home any major FIFA awards, but winning such an award is considered a better chance if she is able to dominate Europe like she has the US and Australia. She is nominated for the 2019 Ballon d'Or and came fifth in the inaugural women's award last year.

Kerr has scored a record 70 goals in the W-League and a record 69 in the NWSL. Her last 41 games in all competitions, including the Matildas, have produced 40 goals. She debuted for the Matildas at age 15 and became the first Australian to score a hat-trick at a World Cup this year.

Chelsea are one of many English clubs leading investment in the women's game in the UK and across Europe. The Blues sit top of the FA WSL ladder by one point after five games.

The English women's national team recently played a friendly against Germany in front ofa record 77,768 crowd at Wembley.

Chelsea have won the title twice, once less than Arsenal – who are coached by Australian Joe Montemurro.
