"They would have received medical attention in Nauru or Papua New Guinea before,and this is now a very serious situation,"Mr Dutton said."Labor was warned about this and the bill is completely flawed."

Senator Lambie told the ABC on Friday morning she was talking to Mr Dutton and Prime Minister Scott Morrison in"good faith"and the discussions were"heading in the right direction".

She said she was not"horse trading"and it was something she believed"just needs to be done".

"I am not going to put any of that at risk by talking to the media about what that is,"Senator Lambie said."I am hoping that common sense will prevail ... what I'm asking I believe it can be done and with a little bit more effort out of both of them we can actually make this happen."

Opposition defence spokesman Richard Marles said on Friday the idea"the sky was going to fall"in because of the medevac laws had been shown to be"bunkum".

"There was nothing actually particularly controversial about this bill or the idea of it. And it doesn't give rise to a breakdown of our border security,"Mr Marles said.
