The 68-strong brigade had three crews fighting fires with their trucks emblazoned with"In memory of Geoff Keaton"and"In memory of Andrew O'Dwyer"on their fronts.
Mr Keaton,32,and Mr O’Dwyer,36,died in the Green Wattle Creek fire south-west of Sydney when a falling tree caused their fire truck to roll.
Both men leave behind partners and young children. RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the two men became fathers days apart in May 2018,Mr Keaton to son Harvey and Mr O’Dwyer to daughter Charlotte.
In a post on Facebook, the brigade said the “devastating news had rocked the brigade”. Three crew members who were injured in the same accident were “doing OK”.
“To our local community and our followers I am blown away by your support and prayers in this dark time and the visits to our station to pay your condolences,” the post said. “To all crews in the field today, stay safe and look after each other."
TheRFS has set up an account for public donations to be shared equally between the two widows. So far $75,450.00 has been raised.
