Flights chartered by the government have returned Australians stranded in places such as Peru,South America,Hawaii and the US as the pandemic escalated.
Though tickets on this flight,the first Nepal Airways plane to land in Brisbane,cost passengers about $3000 each.
From Friday,the Queensland governmentrestricted movement to the state further, threatening to turn around all but residents and exemption holders to their point of origin at their own expense.
Arriving about 12 hours before the new controls,the group were shuttled to two Brisbane hotels under defence force guard to see out their 14-day quarantine.
Staff scrambled to reopen the Four Points hotel restaurant,shuttered along with many others across the sector by sweeping public health orders,to cater for the surprise guests.
Those quarantined were accepting of the difficult conditions and thankful for the help of staff. Though two days in and the lack of fresh air and small food portions were beginning to grate for many of the group.
In a statement,a spokesperson for the hotel and nearby Westin - also housing quarantined guests - said in such"unprecedented times"it was important to do all they could to support the community by taking in the guests.
The spokesperson said it was following the guidelines of authorities and providing three meals a day to guests,who were also able to order external food for delivery.
"Some of our guests have advised dietary requirements and others have requested for additional food items,"they said."The hotel team is working very hard to accommodate all requests."
Mr Sweet said:"I think all of us understand they are doing the best they can in a surprise situation as well."
Turning on the TV that first night elevated stress levels again. Originally from the United States,the couple have lived in Perth for the past six years and been Australian citizens for two years.
WA Premier Mark McGowan had just announced the state would beclosing its own border from Sunday.
"We were sitting in our rooms dumbfounded that we were going to get out of quarantine and potentially be locked out of our home state,"Mr Sweet said.
Clarification later came that the travellers would fall under one of the exemption categories and be able to enter,only to quarantine themselves for another 14 days - this time at home.
If they can get there,that is.
"We may be an exception case to the border closure,but will there be flights?"Mr Sweet said."That's an open question."
