"Look I haven't been formally contacted by the English Premier League, they haven't contacted my office, they haven't contacted me. And we do have hard international borders,"McGowan told a news conference on Sunday.
''The Commonwealth has put in hard international borders to stop people coming in who aren't Australian. I look forward to any contact if they want to provide it to us,but I think there's a lot of obstacles in the way."
The UK'sSun newspaper reported that English agent Gary Williams was behind the proposal which,it said, had been backed by Labor senator Glenn Sterle and had won the backing of several Premier League clubs who had been"alerted and are happy to oblige".
"I have had discussions with contacts at Premier League clubs and they like the idea,"Williams was quoted as saying.
"I have also spoken with government officials and they are enthusiastic. We are speaking again this week. Everybody is safe here. The government has lifted many restrictions.''
McGowan did not rule the idea out completely but sounded lukewarm about Perth putting itself on the front line.
"Britain has very, very high rates of COVID,and they have had a lot of people die. You don't necessarily want to risk these things;as I said,we'll have a look if any submission comes forward, but I think it's a very big ask for that to happen here."
