Dockers football manager Peter Bell said the club's medical team would continue to monitor McCarthy.

"Cam has undergone various tests with specialists and a neurologist. Recently, the neurologist advised that Cam has epilepsy,"Bell said.

"This will mean that Cam has to undergo some treatment, which involves medication for a period of time."

McCarthy has been on light duties since the incident although Bell said he took part in match simulation during Thursday's training session. He remains upbeat about a return.

"There's no reason, according to the specialist, that he can't continue to play AFL football,"Bell said.

McCarthy was due to play his 50th game with the Dockers as he enters his fourth season at the club, having played 21 games for Greater Western Sydney.
