The public health emergency was due to expire on August 17,but that date can be extended.

Four of the six Queenslanders who have died after contracting novel coronavirus were cruise ship passengers.

Three of those deaths were linked to the infamous Ruby Princess cruise shipthat was allowed to dock in Sydney.

Cruise lines have begun selling itineraries departing Brisbane from September and the city's new multimillion-dollar cruise terminal is set to be completed next month.

The terminal is prepared to accept its first ship,the Carnival-owned Pacific Dawn,at 6am on October 3 at Luggage Point.

That date may be pushed back if the public health emergency is extended.

The Australian Border Force has also issued a temporary ban on the arrival of ships,which expires on September 17.

The new terminal will accommodate some of the biggest cruise ships in the world including Royal Caribbean International's 293-metre Radiance of the Seas.

About 150 ships visit Brisbane each year and the new terminal will have capacity to accommodate as many as 700.

Luggage Point is located some 20 kilometres north-east of Brisbane and adjacent to Brisbane Airport.

There were 13 departures scheduled for October alone.

Before the pandemic,ocean liners longer than 270 metres had to dock at the simple grain terminal at the Port of Brisbane’s Fisherman Island,while smaller ships could pull up at Portside Wharf at Hamilton.
