That Williams'move earned GWS a first-round compensation pick (currently pick 10) indicates the player received a contract every bit as big as his asking price.

"No,I don't think[that there's extra pressure on me],"Williams told reporters on Sunday."You know,I sort of knew there was always going to be speculation and people were going to have their opinion,which is fine,no matter what.

"That's football and that's the way it is. I am not worried about what anyone else says. I am just worried about getting down there and gaining the respect of the playing group and coaching staff and make sure I am doing all the right things.

"Hopefully I can bring that leadership;I have been on the list eight years now so I am considered … an older boy now,which is weird."

Carlton have long needed strong and quick support for Patrick Cripps in the midfield and while Williams played mostly as a half-back for the Giants,Blues fans and coaches hope he can have an impact in the middle.

"100 per cent[I want to be a bona fide midfielder],"he said."I think over the last few years at the Giants with injuries that comes with opportunity for me pushing into the midfield.

"Every time I have gone in there I have taken it with both hands,it's a lot of fun playing in the midfield.

"As a junior I played all my footy through the midfield so if I get the opportunity I know I am not going to walk in and play right next to Patty Cripps,[Sam] Walsh and all those young boys,but I know I have got to work for it."

"It's not like I am going to walk in and play day one."

Williams also said he'd play anywhere coach David Teague asked him too,including up forward with one of his idols,Eddie Betts.

The pair have been texting the past few weeks,with Betts offering advice on moving interstate. Betts,coach Teague and fellow former Giant Will Setterfield have also offered Williams a place to stay when he gets to Melbourne.

Given the pandemic restrictions he can't get down from Albury just yet,nor can he look for a place to live properly.

"Hopefully I can kick the football to him[Betts] a few times next year,"Williams said.

"I absolutely love the club[GWS],I love all the lads up there,I have made such good friendships. I have nothing but praise for the Giants and I know myself and my family are absolutely indebted to the Giants.

"It still feels pretty surreal. I was a Carlton supporter growing up and my family were too."
