The move came as Carlton offered Essendon pick eight and a swap of future picks for Adam Saad,a deal the Bombers have rejected as they remain firm they require eight as a single stand-alone pick for the player.
Carlton have been prepared to part with pick eight for the uncontracted defender and under the deal proposed they would get Essendon's future second-round pick, giving the Bombers back their future third-round pick.
Were the deal done Essendon would have picks six, seven and eight in this draft and accept a slide of picks in next year's draft.
Essendon have rejected that offer because they want that future second-round pick to give to GWS for youngster Jye Caldwell, who has asked to be traded to Essendon. The Giants have to date rejected that offer for the player they took at pick 11 in the 2018 draft. GWS want want a first-round pick for Caldwell.
The Blues are exploring options to trade pick eight to other clubs and split it for two later picks – a move that would further complicate the trading for Saad.
The Bulldogs meanwhile are interested in Collingwood's Adam Treloar and believe it is not inconceivable they could trade for him and still keep midfielder Josh Dunkley.
