The same code was declared at the RBWH hours later,where a worker said the situation was becoming unsafe and the shortage of beds was “dire”.
The increase in coronavirus patients at Cairns Hospital came at the same time as a spike in road crash victims,pushing the hospital to capacity.
There were 37 active COVID-19 cases in Queensland on Wednesday,six being treated at Cairns Hospital.
Medical services director Don Mackie said all six COVID-19 patients were being treated in isolation.
“The whole situation has put huge pressure on the staff,” he said.
Dr Mackie said if more cases emerged the hospital would have to start to “cohort” people,“meaning putting all of the COVID-positive patients into a single area without the negative pressure rooms”.
On Wednesday a spokesman for Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said,“it is a matter for the Cairns[Hinterland] Hospital and Health Service”.
