Kobe the Pomeranian.
The court heard that the pair had begun dating in June 2017 and moved into a Southbank apartment together. A little over a year later,Mr Chow paid a breeder in NSW more than $4000 for a Pomeranian puppy, which Ms Chang named Kobe.
When they broke up in November 2019,Ms Chang took Kobe with her, despite Mr Chow asking her not to. He sent a text message demanding Kobe be returned before following up with letters from his solicitors. A month later,Mr Chow filed his statement of claim in court seeking possession of Kobe.
However, magistrate Meghan Hoare rejected Mr Chow’s claim, preferring Ms Chang’s evidence that the dog was purchased for her as a gift and should remain hers.
Text messages between the couple leading up to the purchase of Kobe were provided as evidence to show that Mr Chow was initially reluctant to be a dog owner.

On one occasion,Ms Chang sent screenshots of a puppy with a message “bday gift please” to which Mr Chang replied “no pets baby”.
Another time, when Ms Chang sent a photo of a rescue dog,Mr Chow responded “Daddy is busy making money. No time for a doggy like this”.
