Key defender Howe looks to have avoided tendon damage to his hamstring with the club expecting that the injury he suffered duringFriday night’s match against West Coast will keep him out in the medium term rather than long term.

The 30-year-old,who played just four games in 2020 because of a knee injury, had scans in Melbourne on Saturday morning with a club source saying they had cleared the possibility that Howe suffered a tendon injury, however he would still be sidelined for several weeks due to scar tissue damage in his hamstring.

De Goey has already been ruled out of next Sunday’s Anzac Day clash against Essendon after he suffered concussion and a broken nose when he collided head first into Eagles midfielder Tim Kelly’s hip in the first quarter.

Magpies forward Brody Mihocek, who also finished the game on the sidelines with an icepack applied to his shoulder to treat a sore AC joint,is expected to recover in time for Anzac Day. The Magpies have an eight-day break.

Will Kelly lined up in defence against Werribee in the VFL on Saturday and could be brought in to replace Howe with Nathan Murphy, who has been an emergency this season, also vying for a spot. Caleb Poulter and Ollie Henry could also earn selection with Tyler Brown a chance to return to the seniors after being dropped after round three.

The Eagles were confident post game that Tom Cole and Josh Rotham had not suffered concussionwhen they clashed heads late in the win over the Magpies. Both suffered cuts to the face and were assisted from the ground.
