Capped just eight times at international level, the former Borussia Dortmund gloveman has been a back-up to Mat Ryan during Graham Arnold’s tenure as coach, and hasn’t actually gotten onto the field for the Socceroos since a friendly against Brazil at the MCG in 2017.
Ryan is Arnold’s long-time preference in goal and while he plays at Arsenal,he has only featured in three games since joining them on loan in January, and was at risk of losing his spot in the team to Langerak.
But Langerak,32,has saved Arnold from having to make a call, ruling himself out of contention for the Socceroos altogether citing a desire to stay close to his family.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions I have had to make in terms of football, but it is the right decision for me and my young family,” Langerak said in a statement.
“I have looked at the international calendar up to next year’s World Cup and the likely time away from family, not only due to the camps themselves but periods afterwards in quarantine.
“After sitting down with my family and close circle,I have decided to put my family first because leaving my family alone in a foreign country[Japan] with no family support during a pandemic is not something that I am comfortable with.”
