“As much as a warrior McEvoy has been over a long period of time,it’s a challenge for him to get over the top of ruckmen,” Clarkson said.
“He competes remarkably well but the guy is 31 years of age and has been a fantastic player and leader for us,too.
“That’s not to suggest that he is finished now but the support we can give him ... Ned has been on our list for three years. He needed to grow a stronger body to be able to compete at AFL level. But we think he is ready to have a crack at it.”
McEvoy,31,hasn’t had the influence he would have wanted in his maiden year as captain. He has recorded his fewest ranking points since 2016,and the Hawks are ranked 18th for centre-square clearance differential and 18th for overall clearance differential.
He had 26 hitouts and three marks in a stinging defeat to North Melbourne last Saturday and while his statistics were similar to Todd Goldstein, the veteran Kangaroo polled four AFL Coaches Association votes.
Clarkson hopes Reeves, listed at 104 kilograms, can help give midfielders Tom Mitchell,Jaeger O’Meara and James Worpel first use against a Carlton midfield boasting Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh.
