“We had a fantastic lead-up and for my body to let me down is really disheartening. But knowing that we did nothing wrong,it’s something that can’t be explained at this time. There were no red flags. There was nothing. It was just an acute episode, which is tough.”

Barty gave no detail about the nature of the injury,or the rehabilitation that would be required, but her camp hope the three-week break between the French Open and the start of Wimbledon will be enough to see the 25-year-old recover and be somewhere near her best.

As Barty’s battle against the clock begins, fellow Australians Alex de Minaur,James Duckworth and Astra Sharma are also turning their attention to the grass court season.

“It is my best clay-court season, but it’s not even close to what I want it to be,” he said. “At the end of the day you don’t want it[the loss] to hang around[in your head] because the grass season is just around the corner. This year,we don’t have much prep time so you want to make sure you use every single week on the grass that you can. That’s the plan,to move on.

“A couple of things didn’t go my way,but I came up against a very good opponent,a very good opponent on clay and an experienced opponent who has made the semi-finals here before. He played at a high level today and I missed a couple of chances that could have made a difference.

“We move on,it’s not the end of the world.”
