He made the comments after a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman warned of damage to Australia because it was a “cat’s paw” for another country,making it clear restrictions on trade were linked to Chinese foreign policy objectives.
Mr Frydenberg emphasised the shift in policy in Beijing in response to a warning from United States President Joe Biden’s top adviser on Asia,Kurt Campbell,abouta “harshness” from China toward Australia that will last for years.
“I’m not sure that they have the strategic thinking to go back to a different kind of diplomacy towards Australia right now,” Mr Campbell told an Asia Society event hosted by former prime minister Kevin Rudd.

“I see a harshness in their approach that appears to be unyielding.”
Asked about these remarks on Wednesday,Mr Frydenberg argued China had changed under Mr Xi in a way that undermined the friendlier relations between Australia and China during the time of a former president,Hu Jintao.
“We are living with a different China than what we have seen in years prior,” Mr Frydenberg said.
