He later self-diagnosed that he had broken his leg,as he had done so in 2009 and 2012,and the Magpies confirmed after scans on Saturday that the five-time Copeland Trophy winner had suffered a hairline fracture.
“Unfortunately,Scott will miss the remainder of the season,” said Magpies general manager of football Graham Wright.
“It takes a bit to bring him down. He has been durable almost beyond belief to have played 334 matches across 16 seasons but a fracture, however small, requires appropriate treatment and care.
“There is no displacement and Scott is relatively comfortable. As captain he will stay close to our very young group over the last month of the season to contribute as a leader and,as usual,we’ll see him back on the track on day one of pre-season training.”
Pendlebury’s injury has thrown up the question of whether he has captained the club for the last time,as the Magpies’ new coach -the hunt for Nathan Buckley’s replacement continues - may decide it’s time for change. Pendlebury has led the Magpies a club-record 181 times.
He said on Saturday he did not require surgery and will resume running within six weeks.
The Magpies made what appeared to be an odd decision to have Mason Cox as the medical substitute, and the American forward had little impact with a goal and five disposals, having replaced Pendlebury.
