“It’s hard to know the right way to share this,I think the most important thing to do is to own my story authentically,” he said.
“In doing so,I hope to allow the narrative to run as it is intended. With purpose and to minimise speculation.
“Unfortunately life has thrown another curveball my way and my testicular cancer has recurred,sadly meaning that I will need to undergo a round of chemotherapy.”
Docherty said that while he was looking forward to getting back out to the track for pre-season,his current focus was his health.
He urged people to get checked “if anything doesn’t feel right”,and later revealed in a joint statement with Carlton Football Club that the secondary occurrence of his cancer was detected during a routine medical check-up.
“I am very fortunate this secondary diagnosis was detected early as part of a routine check-up. We now have a clear plan in place to get through this,” he said.
