Bradley echoed the sentiments and, after a torrid season for Ratten and the Saints,it’s no doubt his support has been important to dealing with the disappointment of missing out on back-to-back finals appearances.

Ratten already has an eye to next year heading into Sunday’s final round clash with Fremantle as he will bring back Jack Bytel for another game and rest young forward Max King who is battling soreness after a tiring campaign.

Darragh Joyce won’t play as he still hasconcussion symptoms from last week’s clash with Geelong.

Ratten was asked if he thought the tackle from Tom Hawkins, which led to Joyce’s concussion, should be a reportable offence next season but Ratten deferred that one to the AFL.

“Let them go through that, maybe review it and maybe there will be a slight interpretation change,” Ratten said.

Off the field, the Saints are making changes with the club announcingveteran star Jake Carlisle was retiring,it follows news this week the Saints would not be offering him a new contract.

Ratten also said he was confident ruckman Paddy Ryder had agreed to return on a one-year deal for 2022.

Ratten feels frustrated about the first half of 2021 but sees promise in how the Saints have finished the campaign.

“There is real frustration around the first half of the year when our form was so inconsistent,” Ratten said.

“The back end of the year,we have played some good footy,we haven’t won every week but the way we have gone about it has been pleasing.

“We are ranked about fourth in the comp in how many inside-50s we allow each game but the opposition is sometimes still scoring us which is an issue for us but our back end, since the bye,has been pleasing.”
