“The outstanding response of our health system has ensured that we have been able to stamp out clusters before they lead to widespread community transmission.”

Opposition health spokeswoman Ros Bates said the LNP would not oppose the bill but believed the powers should only be extended until December 10,and also moved an amendment,which failed,which would have forced Queensland Health to publish the expert advice behind restrictions on its website.

“We are not asking for the powers to end,we are asking to have a say in whether they need to be extended again,” she said.

LNP leader David Crisafulli said December should be “enough time for the vaccination rate to reach the levels that we need it to do”.

But Ms D’Ath said the government did not want the powers to be in place any longer than was absolutely necessary.

“However,this is not going to be over in September or October or November,” she said.

“Everyone knows that the circumstances over the next two months are not going to improve.

“NSW themselves have actually stated publicly the worst is yet to come.”

Ms D’Ath said the emergency powers would not be extended permanently and she could declare the end of the public health emergency if she was satisfied COVID-19 no longer posed a significant risk.

Greens MP Michael Berkman attempted to move amendments,which were blocked by Labor,to create a bipartisan parliamentary COVID committee to inquire into and report on border closures,lockdowns,hotel quarantine,contact tracing,hospital capacity,economic support for workers and renters and national cabinet decisions.

“Keeping Queenslanders in the dark is not only undemocratic,but it creates an environment where conspiracy theories can flourish and that is incredibly dangerous,” he said.
