Dr Young said walk-ups were being encouraged at all the community hubs,but a booking system was still in place.

“Just walk up,you might have to wait for a little while,you mightn’t. Have a look at the queues,look at somewhere else maybe,or if you think that the queues are too long,make a booking then and there to come back at another time,” she said.

Ms D’Ath rejected suggestions the state government was admitting defeat on the AstraZeneca rollout by offering Pfizer for over-60s.

“AstraZeneca has been available to anyone under the age of 60 if they wanted to go to their GP and have a discussion,” she said.

“So people under 60 have been getting AstraZeneca but they’ve been getting it through GPs and community pharmacies.

“There’s going to be lots of choices out there for people;what we didn’t want was from next week everyone under-60 have three choices and everyone over-60 having only one.”

There were 25,288 vaccinations given in the 24 hours to Friday morning,bringing Queensland to 58.17 per cent of the population who have now had their first dose of a COVID vaccine and 39.95 per cent who have had two and are now fully vaccinated.
