The former A-League midfielder - best known for his ‘scorpion kick’ goal for the Newcastle Jets in the 2018 semi-finals,which was nominated for FIFA’s Puskas Award - is the talk of Birmingham at the moment,or at the very least the blue half of it.
After making 15 appearances in England’s Championship last season following his transfer from Adelaide United,McGree has been starved of opportunities this term. But in the last fortnight he has won over his manager Lee Bowyer and the club’s sizeable fanbase with a string of top-shelf performances.
Unbeaten in their last four outings,McGree has played in each one for Birmingham, starting three times and scoring twice. His latest performance was described as a “masterclass” by the Birmingham Mail. It also came on his 23rd birthday and got him into the Championship’s team of the week.
Arnold recently watched McGree play at St. Andrews, where he has quickly become a fan favourite. But he may soon share the despair of many Blues supporters who are struggling to come to terms with the fact that they might be about to lose a player they believe is Premier League quality.
McGree is actually on loan at Birmingham City from Charlotte FC,an incoming Major League Soccer franchise in the USA. They don’t play their first match until April - but they bought McGree off Adelaide last year for an undisclosed fee and agreed to send him to the Blues in the interim.
Bowyer said this week it was unlikely they’d be able to retain him beyond January 1,when his deal is due to expire and McGree is supposed to report to Charlotte for pre-season training. Arnold’s clear preference is that Birmingham work out a permanent deal quickly,so that one of Australia’s most promising young talents can avoid moving to an inferior league at this crucial stage of his development.
