Mr Gollschewski said the 12,000 people in the old system have been advised of the automated process.

He said as long as people answer the questions correctly, the new system would issue the pass immediately.

“People are able to do that right up to the last moment before they travel actually,” he said.

Mr Gollschewski urged people to get their pass before travel, citing recent examples of a man flying who got approved while on a plane into Queensland.

Travellers will be able to upload screenshots of negative COVID tests and other documents needed for the pass.

Mr Gollschewski said eight people were turned away at road borders for reasons including not having a border pass or trying to enter from a hotspot.

“I appreciate how people are feeling because we’ve been going through this for such a long time now and there’s been periods where people were completely locked out.

“And this is terrible for these families,so one of the things that we felt with this all happening was great relief.”

As restrictions ease and travellers can enter from other airports,Mr Gollschewski said police presence was increasing at airports across the state.

“Now people can fly into any airport with this direct flight or connect through one stop,so we’re having to increase our presence across the state into a variety of different airports, whereas previously, mostly it was just through Brisbane,” he said.

He said there would be random audits to ensure compliance across the state.
