Her come-from-behind triumph sets up a compelling fourth-round clash against Ashleigh Barty. Interestingly, the Queenslander had to beat Anisimova, then aged 18,in the Roland Garros semi-finals on the way to her first major victory in 2019.
“Going into this match I knew I had to be playing sharp if I wanted to give myself a chance,” Anisimova told Channel Nine.
“Naomi is always going to be paying well. She’s an absolute champion,so I knew I had to try and set up my game and try to be aggressive.

“I think that’s what I started doing in the second set and, honestly,I’m so grateful that I was able to play so well today and get this win. It means a lot.”
An impressive and entertaining match throughout, the intensity lifted late and the prospect of a tiebreaker suddenly loomed large.
