That figure will climb as the water recedes,with the damage bill tipped to top $1 billion and even surpass that of the 2011 floods.
Suncorp has fielded more than 13,000 of the claims so far,with another 11,000 filtering into providers from northern NSW.
Appearing alongside Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Steven Miles on Wednesday morning,Suncorp chief executive Steve Johnston was asked if the federal government needed to underwrite natural disaster insurance.
He disagreed,saying the key to making insurance more affordable was to “really get thismitigation and resilience program up and running”,adding that the state government had been “leading the way”.
“It seems ironic to me that you can get a subsidy for a solar panel on your roof,but you can’t get a subsidy to batten your roof down to manage a category 5 cyclone,” he said,adding that many of the flooded properties would have already been repaired several times.
“There’s a range of flood-mitigation initiatives that are sitting on the shelf ready to be approved by the state,federal and local authorities.
