Geelong beat Essendon 51 to 26 in the clearances and won the inside 50 count 63 to 48 with Patrick Dangerfield,Joel Selwood and Brandan Parfitt able to stroll out of stoppages and make the Bombers’ midfielders appear small and timid.

Rutten admitted the loss of Kyle Langford to a hamstring injury early in the game threw their plans out but he was not using any excuses saying it was obvious they needed to improve their contest work.

“It was a long way off anywhere near our best footy,” Rutten said. “It’s really clear what areas we need to hone in on and where we need to get better and that is the contest stuff.”

He described the performance of some of the more senior players as strange as they were fumbling and slow to move. “We haven’t seen that a lot from them in the past,” Rutten said.

The Cats’ win was even more impressive as they were without Cameron after quarter-time when he was injured and eventually sent to hospital for scans following a heavy clash with Essendon’s Jayden Laverde.

The 28-year-old Coleman medal winner left the ground doubled over as he attempted to regain his breath and run before the Cats decided to take him to hospital midway through the second half of the match. He left the rooms on a stretcher and was put in an ambulance.

Cats’ coach Chris Scott ruled out concussion but said the club decided to send him away for a precautionary scan to his hip and side after his condition deteriorated.

“He seemed to be okay. His knock was to the body. There’s no concussion issue there ... Jeremy just couldn’t get going,” Scott said.

“We were prepared to wait as long as possible but he was going downhill[and] not improving so my understanding is that sent him off for a precautionary scan, but I couldn’t even tell you exactly where it is. The feedback I’ve got is that they are comfortable he’s okay but they just want to double-check.”

Scott described the impact as body shot with the impact occurring between chest and the hips. He said Cameron had a hip pointer injury but the scans were to “double-check his internal status”.

He also confirmed Sam De Koning would miss next Friday’s clash against Sydney due to concussion while the Bombers will be without Kyle Langford who hurt his hamstring early in the match. Jake Stringer is in line for a return while Laverde was described as sore after his clash with Cameron.
