Geelong beat Essendon 51 to 26 in the clearances and won the inside 50 count 63 to 48 with Patrick Dangerfield,Joel Selwood and Brandan Parfitt able to stroll out of stoppages and make the Bombers’ midfielders appear small and timid.
Rutten admitted the loss of Kyle Langford to a hamstring injury early in the game threw their plans out but he was not using any excuses saying it was obvious they needed to improve their contest work.
“It was a long way off anywhere near our best footy,” Rutten said. “It’s really clear what areas we need to hone in on and where we need to get better and that is the contest stuff.”
He described the performance of some of the more senior players as strange as they were fumbling and slow to move. “We haven’t seen that a lot from them in the past,” Rutten said.
The Cats’ win was even more impressive as they were without Cameron after quarter-time when he was injured and eventually sent to hospital for scans following a heavy clash with Essendon’s Jayden Laverde.
