Finn was warned about his inflammatory social media posts several times by his Liberal colleagues before his expulsion from the party.
He previously compared Premier Daniel Andrews to Adolf Hitler, described a former female staffer as a rat,and shared several pro-Trump posts during and after the Capitol Hill riots in the US.
Finn told 3AW on Thursday morning he had been approached by eight different political parties following his departure from the Liberals, and found the DLP was “a far better fit” for him.
The party was formed as a result of a split within the Australian Labor Party in the 1950s over what was perceived to be communist influences within Labor.
Despite wielding heavy influence in the 50s and 60s,the party wasat risk of getting deregistered earlier this year after it was unable to muster enough members to meet the Australian Electoral Commission’s 1500-member threshold.
Finn said he would run in the Western Metropolitan Region, the electorate he has represented since 2006. Before that,he was the member for the now-abolished lower house seat of Tullamarine between 1992 and 1999.
