“There’s a very clear message from COVID that is that pharmacists have been able to step up where needed to fill gaps,” the minister toldThe Sydney Morning Herald.
“There are parts of the state where it is extremely tough to get in to see a GP and there are some conditions,like UTIs,that I think lend themselves to the possibility of pharmacists having an expanded scope of practice.”
Pharmacy Guild President Trent Twomey,who lobbied for the change,said patients should also be able to access care from pharmacists for colds and skin infections,along withprescriptions for the contraceptive pill,blood pressure and cholesterol tablets.
Hazzard’s move will reignite a fierce turf war with doctors as the Australian Medical Association argues it is dangerous to allow pharmacists to prescribe drugs directly to patients,arguing they may have a conflict of interest.

AMA president Professor Steve Robson said the peak medical body was “totally,completely,unequivocally against independent pharmacy prescribing as modelled by the Queensland government”.
“We think it’s wrong ... that’s a model that we think is is bad for patients,” Robson said.
