On stage, federal frontbenchers smiled upon the hundreds of party and union delegates, among them Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles,Finance Minister Katy Gallagher,Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen,Employment Minister Tony Burke,Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek and Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney.
Marles, who made a cameo from Victoria to introduce the prime minister on Saturday, said the occasion was “unique.”
“While he remains quintessentially Albo, today he addresses you as something more, from the most exalted platform in our nation and as a proud son of Sydney’s inner west...and a ridiculous Rabbitohs fan.”
The significance of Albanese’s attendance was not lost on any of the hundreds of party and union delegates in the room - the first sitting prime minister to address a conference since Kevin Rudd in 2013 and the first NSW prime minister since Paul Keating.
Receiving a rock star welcome,a visibly emotional Albanese was mobbed as he walked the aisle to a standing ovation,a reception he later joked that he wasn’t always accustomed to as a party delegate since 1983.
