Sogavare alarmed western nations and his fellow Pacific leaders earlier this year by signing a wide-ranging security pact with China.
Solomon Islands Opposition Leader Matthew Wale expressed alarm about the gift on Twitter,saying:“Sucking up to Soga[Sogavare]&trying to out-compete China! For use where&when?”

Wale described the gift as “very disturbing” in a statement,asking:“Obviously we do not have external threats so why the introduction of these high-powered guns? Or are we being militarised again?”
Wale accused Sogavare of a power grab earlier this year when he successfully delayed the nation’s elections by seven months.
