“I want everybody in the city and across the state to come out and enjoy the game.”

Foster said he had reached out to the NSW government to establish a live site after seeing the scenes at Federation Square in Melbourne. “I would have loved to have experienced it myself,” he said.

“This is creating history. We’re playing against[Argentinian captain] Lionel Messi. The next generation of kids want to be out there experiencing it,alongside the fans – experiencing the emotion, the passion, what this game is all about.

“This is an occasion when all of Australia needs to come out ... People should be on the streets across all of our towns, along with the cities, and if we win then Albo’s got to do something, because no one’s turning up on Monday, that’s for sure,” he said, referring to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Foster said the Socceroos could beat Argentina, even though the South American team is one of the favourites to win the Cup.

“Australia have a very good record against Argentina. They beat them 4-1 in the 1988 Bicentennial Cup,and they were the reigning world champions at the time. It was a magnificent win,so the Socceroos will be drawing inspiration from that.
