“Due to their importance and international scope, the Oscars tend to generate a lot of anxiety and pressure on those attending,” says Samata Pattinson, the chief executive of RCGD Global,a sustainable fashion advocacy group that was founded by Suzy Amis Cameron, wife ofAvatar director James Cameron.
For this year’s Oscars,Pattinson and RCGD Global have produced a style guide for attendees, which includes tips such as sourcing vintage items,as well as how to extend the life of garments after the ceremony.
Pattinson says while there has been plenty of progress already, the Oscars still carries a lot of pressure on attendees to look their best, which is sometimes conflated with wearing something new.
“People don’t want added risks, and opting for a safer bet,in terms of dressing, helps mitigate it,” she says. “That is why the Oscars are a crucial moment of the year for us and one of our main focuses. We want to reshape the conceptions around sustainability and reinforce the idea that being conscious and feeling glamorous are not opposites.”
