Cunnington had aimed to play a full season and showed some good form in parts of this year.
But coach Alastair Clarkson subbed him out of the loss to Carlton on April 7 and warned his side couldn’t afford to carry players who weren’t performing,a message he also shared with Cunnington.
“We just can’t keep blokes on the field if they’re not playing their role to their capability then we need to make a change and that’s the way we went,” Clarkson said after the Carlton game.
Cunnington had 27 disposals in each of the next two matches but had just seven touches before being subbed out again last round.
He was not included as one of the emergencies so appears likely to play in the VFL.
And Collingwood have lost another big man to injury,with Billy Frampton injuring his groin on Wednesday.
“I’ve got some bad news,he’s out,” Magpies coach Craig McRae told SEN on Thursday.
“He’s got a slight groin injury,he’ll miss a couple of weeks.”
