The sanction is one game lower than the four matches given to Geelong defender Tom Stewart last year, and Richmond’s Nathan Broad for a sling tackle earlier this year.
It is nevertheless a significant disruption for De Goey, who, with the bye factored in,will be out for a month while in the midst of a career-best season.
De Goey detailed his contrition and concern for Hewett in a 45-minute hearing where the Pies did not contest any aspect of the charge, saying he had texted the 19-year-old to apologise.
“First and foremost, you’re worried about the person ... and then after just making sure he’s OK,” De Goey said.
“I felt disappointed and shattered for him personally because that was obviously not my intention to hit him high.
“I don’t go out there and play my footy a dirty way.
“It wasn’t until I looked at the screen that I saw I caught Elijah high.”
