“Don’t abuse players and in particular don’t pick out the bloke who of all the Aussie team seems the nicest one and hasn’t done anything ever to upset anyone.”

The MCC’s chair,Bruce Carnegie-Brown,haddelivered a clear message to members when he wrote to them during the Headingley Test.
“I cannot downplay the impact that the behaviour of a few members has had on the perception of our club,” he wrote.
“In less than 100 days the[England and Wales Cricket Board] will report back on the actions to be taken in response to the report, published just last week,of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket. As the second-most referenced organisation,we had much to reflect on in terms of the work we needed to undertake. This has now been brought into even sharper focus.
“The video footage captured on Sunday (including some which was taken in clear breach of our regulations) is there for all to see. The members shown on camera have brought shame on MCC. Their actions hinder our efforts to promote the positive things our club does to promote and celebrate the game of cricket. Their actions inhibit our ability to carry out our role as guardian of the laws of cricket and the spirit of cricket.”

As a consequence of the drama, more space has been mandated between players and members until the end of the season, including a ban on members’ presence in the pavilion stairwells during breaks in play.
The MCC’s member regulations stipulate that offences such as “abusive, offensive or inappropriate behaviour or language”,“intoxicated and/or anti-social behaviour or language”,“unwanted contact” or “threatening behaviour” carry penalties ranging from a 12-month suspension to a permanent expulsion.
Khawaja made his displeasure clear at the end of the Lord’s Test in an interview with Nine.
“Some of the stuff that was coming out of the members’ mouths was really disappointing, and I wasn’t just going to stand by and cop it,” Khawaja said after Australia won the Test by 43 runs.
“So I just talked to a few of them,a few of them[were] throwing out some pretty big allegations and I just called them up on it,and they kept going. And if they kept going I was like,‘Well,it’s your membership here’,so I was just pointing them out. But it’s pretty disrespectful,to be honest. I just expect a lot better from the members.”
