This masthead has previously reported the club wasclose to an extension for older brother Josh, who is due to be a free agent when he comes out of contract at the end of next year, for up to six more years.

Two sources with knowledge of the discussions – who asked for anonymity because the negotiations remained at a sensitive stage – confirmed the Magpies were negotiating a new long-term extension of Nick Daicos’ contract with his manager Robbie D’Orazio, but the actual dollar amounts were still being finalised.

Regardless of where the final dollar amount lands, former club president Eddie McGuire observed on Nine’sFooty Classified after Damian Barrett broke the story, that Nick Daicos would become the highest paid 21-year-old in the history of the game.

While dollar amounts were still being discussed,it was accepted by the sources that last year’s Rising Star winner would earn more than $1 million a season in at least some years of his contract extension.

The contract talks were said to be at “the pointy end”. But given he remained in contract for two years, there was no urgency to get it completed, and the final deal could take a week or months to be completed.

Daicos is currently still on the AFL mandated salary for all players in their first two seasons. He had previously signed a two-year extension with Collingwood through until the end of 2025.

It is possible but unlikely the Magpies would rip up that existing two-year contract and draft a new six-year contract rather than sign a new four-year extension to that existing deal.

Collingwood last year locked instar Jordan De Goey on a five-year deal after the midfielder, who would have been a free agent if he’d come out of contract at the end of last season, was the subject to a major offer from St Kilda.

With captainDarcy Moore last year also signing a six-year dealthrough until the end of 2028,Collingwood will have their three best and most important players contracted on long-term deals once the Nick Daicos extension is completed.

This week the club also confirmed ruckman Mason Cox and forwards Ash Johnson and Harvey Harrison had re-committed to the club on two-year deals.
