“The RNA will work with all parties to determine if a suitable funding solution can be found,” he said.
Brisbane Lions chief executive Greg Swann welcomed government support and progress on the RNA option, noting there was a lot of detail still to be worked through.
“It’s pleasing this process is finally moving forward and the Government supports the RNA option as a displacement solution for the Lions,” he said.
“Naturally,a displacement of four or more years represents a major upheaval to the Lions as a club, our fans and members, and we need to ensure we’re as strong as possible to return to the Gabba when it is complete.”
Queensland Cricket were not consulted before the announcement and were still considering the implications.
Schrinner, facing anelection in March, called it a “half-baked” plan because the state was refusing to pay for the entire upgrade.
“It was the state government’s decision to tear down the Gabba,so it’s the state government’s responsibility to find the Brisbane Lions and Heat a temporary home,” Schrinner said.
At a press conferenceon Friday morning,Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk recalled Schrinner describing an upgrade to the showgrounds as “the best option” and said it was reasonable for her government to equally split the costs with the RNA and council.
“Government gets the right to announce it,the minister has announced it,and now he’ll do the detailed consultations.”
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk
“The Brisbane City Council needs to step up … You don’t go and do photo ops and not stump up the cash – I’m sorry,it doesn’t work like that,” she said.
Palaszczuk also pushed back on questions of consultation with the AFL and cricket codes, saying both had been lobbying ministers for answers and this would address them in a win-win arrangement she hoped the codes would commit some money to as well.
A report released by the government last week confirmed its 2021 decision to demolish and redevelop the “tired” Gabba,withlong-ageing infrastructure and earmarked for a facelift since at least 2018,for use as the centrepoint of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
