Data from the Bureau of Health Information released this week found there had been a 5.2 per cent increase in the number of episodes of care from a paediatric specialist in the September quarter compared with the same quarter last year, equating to 778 more visits.
AMA NSW council neonatologist Dr Eveline Staub said a major contributing factor to the problem was the ageing paediatric workforce, particularly in regional areas.
