Australia is being urged to follow the lead of Seville and name its heatwaves.Credit:AP
In Seville, one of Europe’s hottest cities,an initiative to combat the rising toll of sweltering weather began in 2022 with heatwave Zoe,when the temperature exceeded 43 degrees.
Policy expert Rob McLeod,of consultancy firm Renew, said naming heatwaves should be part of an Australian strategy to raise awareness of health risks from extreme heat.
“Heatwaves have killed more people in Australia than any other natural disaster since 1900,and without sustained and ambitious policies to improve our resilience to extreme heat, the challenge will get even harder,” McLeod said.

“In Spain, improved public understanding of the dangers of heatwaves, coupled with a national heatwave plan, has helped save lives.”
Following Zoe,Seville started naming its heatwaves in reverse alphabetical order:Yago,Xenia,Wenceslao and Vera.
Seville also classifies heatwaves depending on their severity, ranging from low to very high risk,in a similar system to Australian bushfire danger ratings.
