The leaking of an encrypted message sent on Monday,February 19,to all the staff in the prime minister’s office has rattled Labor insiders, prompting questions about the motives of apparently unhappy staff and the compromising of confidential information in the nation’s top political office.
In the message,Albanese’s chief of staff,Tim Gartrell, announced veteran Labor staffer David Epstein was joining the office as principal private secretary.
The message stated that it “is an important role as we enter the election year and David is well-qualified for the role, having worked for Labor in a range of senior roles over five successive governments and opposition”.
The leaked text message from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s chief of staff Tim Gartrell.
Gartrell is one of Albanese’s closest confidantes, helped engineer Rudd’s 2007 election victory and is the most senior political staffer in the country.
Following the leak,a senior government source, who asked not to be named so they could discuss the leak, played down the likelihood of an early election and suggested May 2025,the date by which the poll was due, remained the most likely option.
“What he[Gartrell] was saying is that in the next 12 months, either the election will be done or we will be in the middle of one;more likely it will be next year.”
