They must abstain from drugs and not commit further offences for the length of the order. A spokesperson for the AFL confirmed the league was aware two AFLW Sydney Swans players were charged by police late last year after they were caught with a recreational drug.
Nine News reported both players were charged by police in the off-season.
Under the AFL’s illicit drugs policy,which is a medical model geared towards treatment rather than punishment,any players who are caught using illegal drugs receive a first strike,a suspended $5000 fine and counselling,and are subject to target testing.
A second strike means a player is publicly named and suspended for four matches.
That is different from the AFL’s anti-doping code,which focuses on performance-enhancing drugs. However,a match-day positive to illicit drugs also triggers a violation under the anti-doping code.
