McCartney,an experienced official,was also fined $20,000 by the AFL in 2021 when he went into the umpires rooms at half-time of a Giants match in Canberra to give them some feedback on their performance.

McCartney played 182 AFL games across stints with Collingwood,Adelaide and North Melbourne between 1991 and 2003. He missed the Kangaroos’ 1999 premiership through suspension.

A victim of the 2002 Bali bombings,he retired after his comeback game in mid-2003.
