Next door, one of Queensland's biggest developers,Philip Usher Constructions, has applied to build two residential towers containing 197 units.
Since November,it is now proceeding with one tower.
Parish secretary Constantine Drozdovski, who addressed a Brisbane City Council meeting last week, said he was not opposed to development on the site.
But Mr Drozdovski said the proposed twin-tower block would crowd out the church.
"Their development is simply not sympathetic to our cathedral,"he said.
"It superimposes itself onto our site. Look at St John's,the Anglican Cathedral in the city.
"The Plaza they have next to their church is sympathetic to their church - it is low rise. We just want that."
