The 10th film in the saga that began in 1968 with Charlton Heston wailing at humanity’s stupidity is set a few generations after the events ofWar for the Planet of the Apes (2017). The long-dead Caesar, patriarch of the royal ape family,is now but a dimly remembered and dubiously interpreted legend. The new leader of the apes is the tyrant Proximus, who has found a cache of deadly weapons and wants the captured human,Nova (Freya Allan),to help him access it. The world-building inKingdom of the Planet of the Apes is immense and the visual effects,by New Zealand company Weta FX,are superb. In Noa (Owen Teague),we have a young chimp with the potential to become the next Caesar. There’s an echo ofThe Jungle Book’s King Louie,or Greek mythology’s Prometheus,in Proximus’s desire for man’s great fire but, overall,Wes Ball (creator of theMaze Runner franchise) does a great job of setting up the series for the next phase of its evolution. In cinemas now.Karl Quinn

When Bob Bierenbaum moved to Las Vegas in the ’90s,he seemed a catch – a successful doctor who flew his own plane and spoke five languages. But years later, when some of his ex-girlfriends get together to discuss their experiences,a dark picture of the man they all dated slowly emerges, and the women begin to suspect that he murdered his ex-wife,Gail Katz. One of them,Carole Fisher, hostsThe Girlfriends,a true-crime podcast that not only tells the story of how this group helped piece together the truth that resulted in a conviction, but also humanises and memorialises Katz, while celebrating the sisterhood that avenged her.Barry Divola

GROOVE/ Track star

London-based session musician Fabiana Palladino takes the spotlight with her debut solo album.

London-based session musician Fabiana Palladino takes the spotlight with her debut solo album.Buster Grey Jung

It’s not often that session musicians, those skilled but mostly anonymous players called in to perform on albums and live shows for big stars, end up in the spotlight. But Fabiana Palladino isn’t just any session player. The London-based artist, who’s been in backing bands for Lorde,Jessie Ware and Sampha, hails from a family of them, most notably her father,Pino, who’s played bass on some of the most influential records of the past four decades, and brother Rocco, now touring with drummer-turned-frontman of the moment Yussef Dayes. With such musicality in her blood,it’s unsurprising that Palladino, whose debut,self-titled album was more than a decade in the making, should arrive fully formed. Infused with the spirit of ’80s R&B and superlative ’90s production,it recalls everything from Eurythmics to Janet Jackson. Lead singleStay With Me Through The Night feels like an instant classic;the other nine songs rarely miss. A stunning contemporary album with a vintage approach to songwriting? More, please.Jonathan Seidler

READ/ When Maggie met Harry

US writer Maggie Nelson is probably best known for her 2015 memoir,The Argonauts,a hybrid study of sexuality, identity, art and politics told in short paragraphs. In Like Love (Fern Press;$45),a series of essays, conversations, reviews and tributes ordered chronologically over two decades,we discover many of Nelson’s lifelong interests at work. As with all collections, some pieces are more effective than others. I particularly enjoyed the conversations with friends and creatives, including feminist performance artist Carolee Schneemann, musician Björk and poet Eileen Myles,as well as her take on Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’sThe Weather in Proust. I don’t always fully understand Nelson’s work, but I can feel my mind pushing up against its limits, which is surely one of the best things about reading category-defying books like hers.Melanie Kembrey

Forget the nightie and dressing gowns this Mother’s Day and go for gifts with a little more torque. The influence of F1 on fashion has been abundant in recent seasons and this graphic print,a collaboration between Melbourne-based brand Ena Pelly and influencer Elle Ferguson, plays on the rev-head aesthetic already being embraced by the likes of Chanel. This long-sleeved item ($220) can be worn as an oversized tee or dress:you choose the gear.Melissa Singer
